Jajce
Sarajevo to Jajce
Scenic drive from Sarajevo through central Bosnia. Check in at a boutique guesthouse in the old town of Jajce. Evening walk to the waterfall that falls inside the town itself — a geology quirk that gave this place its importance for seven hundred years.
Jajce · Plivsko lakes
Jajce fortress & the lakes
Morning climb to the medieval fortress that crowns the town. The view from the top is the same one the last Bosnian king saw. Afternoon at the Plivsko lakes and the old watermills — a postcard-perfect set of twenty wooden huts on a river that has been turning them for centuries.
Travnik
Travnik — the vizier's city
Drive to Travnik, the Ottoman capital of the Bosnia eyalet. We walk the old bazaar, visit the colorful mosque that is tiled unlike any other in the country, and climb to the fortress. Lunch at an inn in Dolac that has been serving travelers for two hundred years. This is the town Ivo Andrić grew up in — we read a page aloud from his Travnik Chronicle in the square where the vizier once held court.
Sarajevo
Return to Sarajevo
Scenic return through the hills. We stop at a family farm on the way back for a cheese tasting — six varieties of Vlašić cheese with honey and walnuts. Arrive in Sarajevo mid-afternoon.
